SHILLONG: UDP president Donkupar Roy on Monday ruled out any threat to the coalition government even if the MDA partners fight the Lok Sabha polls separately.
Speaking to reporters, Roy hoped that UDP candidate Jemino Mawthoh would be accepted by the coalition partners as the common candidate.
Though NPP has not communicated its plan for Shillong seat, the UDP leader is optimistic that a favourable decision will be arrived at.
“Even if NPP puts up candidates for Shillong and Tura, this will not affect the unity of the MDA coalition,” Roy said.
The UDP leader said other regional parties will support the candidate of the party.
He said during the formation of MDA, it was the elected MLAs who gathered and came together to form the government and not the parties.
To a question, the UDP leader said party leaders in Garo Hills want the UDP to contest the Tura Lok Sabha seat.
According to Roy, the Garo Hills leaders feel that the party will be active when it engages in electoral battle.
The UDP president also said the current priority of the party is the upcoming council polls since the Lok Sabha polls will come later.
