TURA: In its initiative to make the district garbage free, a two-day Workshop on Solid and Liquid Resource Management (SLRM) was held at DRDA Conference Hall, Tura recently. In view of this, the Garbage expert and pioneer in Solid and Liquid Resource Management, Garbage to Gold) C Srinivasan was on a two-day visit to the district to impart on SLRM for block and village level functionaries at Tura.
The workshop was organised by the Office of District Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin), West Garo Hills Tura where Chief Executive Officer, Tura Municipal Board, Tura S B Marak, Executive Engineer (PHE) and Member Secretary, DSBM (Gramin), West Garo Hills S D Sangma and others attended the workshop.
During the programme, Srinivasan demonstrated the method of segregation of waste like wrapping of eggshells, medical waste and sanitary pads in different packets respectively before throwing into the dustbins.
“After the household wastes are collected they will be segregated according to their type which is called Source Segregation. Organic waste like vegetables and banana leaves can be fed to the cattle directly, while fresh food items can go to the piggery. Flowers can be washed, dried, powdered and used for Rangoli, etc. Egg Shells are washed, dried, powdered and used in farming. Egg shell powder can be sold at Rs 350 per kg, citrus feels can be dried, powdered and used as eco-friendly vessel washing powder or toilet/floor cleaner while empty coconut shells can be used for planting flowers,” he said.
The participants were also trained to segregate inorganic and recyclable wastes into different categories. “If the recyclable materials are sold together they will fetch a very small price, but if they are segregated and sold they get higher price”, he said.
On the second day of his visit, he went on a field visit to Aminda Rangsagre village of Gambegre Block to assess the requirements according to the population and topography of the village.
It may be mentioned that, in this project, 15 days Master Training of Trainers Programme will be conducted for supervisors and workers and will be given certificates before they start the work. For every village five persons including one supervisor and four workers will be selected. While a supervisor has to be class X pass, no qualification is required for the workers. “This project can provide green jobs for unemployed youths in the villages”, he said and added that preference will be given to BPL list.
