SHILLONG: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has approved its draft manifesto with promises to streamline the administration and functioning of the district councils in both Jaintia and Khasi Hills.
Addressing reporters on Monday, UDP senior working president Bindo Lanong said if the UDP forms the executive committee in the district councils, it will push for anti-defection law. “It is there in Parliament and state assemblies, why not in the District Council,” he added.
The party will soon release the manifesto.
Commenting on lineage and social laws, the senior leader said the framing of laws in respect of any community, the executive committee of the district council has to consult the community, besides having proper consultation.
The party is also putting emphasis on strengthening village courts to settle petty offences.
Lanong said the administration of Hima in the district councils should be seriously looked into as some Hima fall on the international border with Bangladesh.
Again, the UDP in its draft manifesto promised to manage the forests of the district councils, land laws which include exploitation of minerals, agriculture, markets of the district council, strengthening of enforcement wing and checking of labourers coming into the state.
The party is an ally of the Khasi Hills Democratic Alliance led by NPP MDC H S Shylla in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council.
UDP releases list
(Contd from P-3) The UDP has released the sixth list of candidates with six names to contest the council polls on February 27.
From East Jaintia Hills, the party named Hopingstone Bareh from Sutnga-Narwan, Krison Langstang from Sumer and Finelyness Bareh from Rymbai-Khliehriat.
From East Khasi Hills, former Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (youth wing of the BJP) president Egenstar Kurkalang will contest from Nongkrem constituency.
In West Khasi Hills, the party ticket went to the sitting MDC Equator Nongrang from Mairang.
The party ticket for Umroi constituency in Ri Bhoi went to FD Ramsiej.
Informing this after the state election committee meeting, general secretary of UDP, Jemino Mawthoh said the six seats for Shillong is completed, in West Jaintia Hills out of 20 seats, 6 are left, in East Jaintia Hills out of 9 seats, 1 seat is left, all the 11 seats in East Khasi Hills are declared, two seats in South West Khasi Hills are declared, for the five seats in West Khasi Hills, UDP has given the seats of Rambrai and Mawshynrut to HSPDP, in Ri Bhoi district only the constituency of Jirang is yet to be declared.
