SHILLONG: BJP MLA in Meghalaya, Sanbor Shullai has once again reminded the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi about his opposition to the CAB while reiterating that he would resign from the party within a month if the Bill is approved in Rajya Sabha

In a letter to the Prime Minister, Shullai said that the proposed bill had drastically change the prospect of the party in the Northeastern Region as he had joined  the party considering the  prospect of the party which had come with a vision to  develop Meghalaya and the Northeastern region.

However, the decision of the party to enforce the Bill in the Northeastern Region is very disappointing as there are various drawbacks in the Bill which need to be discussed with the stake holders of the Northeastern Region including all the political parties, leaders of various NGOs and traditional bodies etc., before implementing the same.

Stating that the Bill makes illegal migrants eligible for citizenship on the basis of religion as it is difficult to identify people base on religion, he further added that the state of Meghalaya and Northeast as a whole do not have proper international boundary and many boundaries of the state are easily accessible by Bangladeshi illegal migrants.

He also said that Ministry of Home Affair (MHA) has issued a statement to the effect that the approval of any application applying for Citizenship under the Bill will be subjected to the approval of the concerned state authority. However, rejection of any application by the authority would invite and unnecessarily open  doors for litigation once the Bill becomes law.

Thus considering the outcome of the proposed bill I have left it to the wisdom of the people of my state and have decided to leave the party within one month in the event if the proposed bill is passed in Rajya Sabha without taking into consideration the opinion of the people of my state Meghalaya and the people of the North Eastern Region,” he said.

He also said that along with him, more than 10,000 of his supporter who had joined the party, were also willing to resign if the Northeastern states including Meghalaya was not exempted from the implementation of the Bill.
