CM harps on restraint for border peace

SHILLONG: As skirmishes continue to occur along the disputed border areas of Assam and Meghalaya, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has said that abiding by the principles and guidelines of maintaining status quo combined with restraint from both Meghalaya and Assam in the area of differences will stop violent incidents.
Recently, Assam police resorted to lathi-charge against the locals and MeECL workers of Umwali near Langpih who were involved in carrying out electrification work.
A few women and children were also injured in the incident.
However, the chief minister said top leaderships of both the states do not want violent incidents as these cause “a lot of tension”.
He said the Meghalaya government had put it across that this kind of incidents could be easily avoided if both sides maintain restraint and follow the guidelines and format of maintaining status quo in the disputed border areas.
The chief minister also said the state government is ensuring that more coordination takes place, especially at the grassroots level of the district administration and the police to avert recurrence of violence.
