SHILLONG: The State Cabinet has adopted many of the recommendations of the Retired Justice B D Agarwal-led judicial inquiry report regarding the firing incident took place at Resubelpara-Kaldang in North Garo Hills last year
Speaking to media persons here after the Cabinet meeting, Home Minister, James Sangma said that the judicial inquiry committee had recommended that Milseng Sangma should be given a compensation of Rs 1.5 lakhs while other two individuals who had been injured in the incident should be given a compensation of Rs 1 lakh
The Commission also recommended that Meghalaya Police should use modern technology such as high resolution lights, spike strips and automation of check gates besides recommending sensitization programmes for the Meghalaya police personnel on human rights
The Commission also recommended to improve school syllabus on human rights besides imparting skill development training to police personnel to improve efficiency.
Sangma said that the Cabinet has decided to process the compensation amount which has been recommended for the three individual who were injured in the incident
The Cabinet also directed the Education department to improve the syllabus on Human Rights , adding the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission would now also be asked to hold awareness programmes for the police personnel.
It may be recalled that on the night of March 6 last year, police fired at three persons – Milseng Sangma, Tubal Sangma and Janrak Sangma while travelling in a pick-up van on the Resubelpara-Khaldang road in North Garo Hills.
Police fired after suspecting to be militants when they sped away through three different police checkpoints despite being signalled to stop.
The incident fuelled violence as the residents of the village torched Resubelpara police station and barracks and seven police vehicles.
During the inquiry, as many as 13 witnesses were cross-examined. Though the government notified the commission in April, the actual inquiry started at a later stage.
