SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Police have asked the Border Security Force (BSF) to step up surveillance along the Indo-Bangladesh border in view of the ensuing general elections scheduled to be held on April 11 in the state.
Additional DGP (L&O), H Nongpluh, on Thursday told mediapersons that Meghalaya Police is in close contact with the BSF and they have been asked to increase their patrolling along the border.
It may be mentioned that Meghalaya shares 443 kms of border with Bangladesh and a huge chunk of it is unfenced facilitating smuggling of cattle and other items.
“We have written to them so that the borders can be sealed,” he said while informing that the police are also in touch with their Assam counterparts so that the movement of miscreants can be prevented.
Maintaining that preparations for the elections are in place, he also added that as of now there is no indication of any threat from any quarter during the elections and police are taking all measures to ensure a peaceful poll.
It may be mentioned that 20 companies of Central Armed Paramilitary Forces (CAPF) have been deployed throughout the state and they are assisting in area domination. More companies of CAPF are likely to be sent to the state as the closer to polling.
