SHILLONG: The International Convention of Vice Chancellors (ICVC) of Universities of Bangladesh and North East India on Saturday decided to form an international education corridor and collaborate to promote higher education, culture, brotherhood and peace. The convention was organised by Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Sylhet, under the patronage of University Grant Commission, Bangladesh, in association with the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya.
it was attended by vice chancellors and researchers from both the countries. Dipu Moni, Education Minister of Bangladesh, and Prof A Mannan, chairman
of UGC Bangladesh, were also present. The convention decided that it will be a regular affair to be held in different countries on rotation.
Gauhati University will host the next ICVC while the other universities in the North East will be co-organisers. Mannan said Bangladesh looks more to the west while the Northeastern part of India is relatively unexplored in the field of education.
Mahbubul Hoque, chancellor of USTM and special guest of the programme, said, “North East India has more geographical proximity with Bangladesh than the rest of India. The barrier created by physical borders can be removed through extensive collaborative effort. The ICVCs will open doors for further networking in the field of education among the ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) countries in future.” “Connectivity between India and Bangladesh has to be essentially reestablished. We are always grateful to India and the people of the northeastern region for their help during the war of liberation.
The connectivity should not only be in terms of waterways, roadways or airways, but it has to be in terms of connectivity of ideas, minds and hearts”, Moni said.
