DC warns against communal remarks
Mawkyrwat: The District Election Officer of South West Khasi Hills District, Isawanda Laloo on Monday warned the general public that sharing, spreading, comments, posts or messages of communal nature and contents inciting hatred amongst public using any type of medium including social media is not only prohibited but a punishable offence under appropriate Sections of I.P.C and I.T Act. She has asked the people to refrain from committing such actions in order to facilitate free and fair election and for maintenance of peace, communal harmony and normal law and order situation in the region.

Illegal stone quarries in WGH
SHILLONG: The Range Forest Officer in-charge of Tura Beat, C.M.K Sangma, lodged a complaint that on January 12 and 16 he found stone quarries were being operated in areas falling under Hallidayganj Police Station, West Garo Hills. The officer complained that the quarries were being operated by a person identified as Ashraf Ali of Kalapani village. Again, on March 26, Sangma complained that one stone quarry was being operated at Pipulbari under Hallidayganj by Gulbahar Sheikh of Morbilla village. Four labourers were apprehended from the stone quarry, however, later a mob led by Gulbahar Sheikh forcibly took the labourers away from the custody of the Forest officials.

NEHU conducts refresher course
SHILLONG: The University Grants Commission Human Resource Development Centre (UGC-HRDC) and the Department of Cultural and Creative Studies, North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) organised a refresher course in Folkloristics and Semiotics which concluded on Saturday. Director, UGC-HRDC, NEHU and chief guest Rakesh Mohan in his valedictory address expressed profound joy at the completion of the course. He lauded the course coordinator Desmond L. Kharmawphlang, Head of Department of Creative & Cultural Studies for providing support and cooperation in conducting the course for the 5th consecutive year. A total of 41 candidates from Meghalaya (17), Assam (16), Nagaland (4), Sikkim (1), Tripura (1), Arunachal Pradesh (1) and Maharashtra (1) attended the programme. Mohan said that the course will help the participants to excel in basic teaching skills at all educational levels. Besides benefits of career advancement, the participants will also carry the knowledge. Desmond presented a brief report on the course stating that participants who attended the course displayed great enthusiasm.

NSUI celebrates foundation day
SHILLONG: The National Student’s Union of India (NSUI), Meghalaya State Unit, celebrated its foundation day on Monday. Vice President, NSUI, Commingstar Diengngan spoke on the plight of students with regard to scholarships and also highlighted the delay in NEHU’s 5th semester results that affected many students. The NSUI also made the gathering aware of their support to Kiang Nongbah College’s Student Association. Bansharailang Pyngrope, President, NSUI, spoke on the importance of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and to choose Congress candidates. Others who were present included George MLA B. Lyngdoh, Umroi, Bajop Pyngrope, MDC of Rambrai, working president James S Lyngdoh and General Secretary Sanjay Das of Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee.
