Sein Raij foundation day on May 3
SHILLONG: Sein Raij Niamtre, Shillong, will celebrate its 56th foundation day on May 3 followed by the Dorbar Lyngkhooh Snem on May 5 with Dasakhiatbha, Chairman of State Development Reforms Commission, as the chief guest. The Jaintia Indigenous Knowledge Centre dealing with herbal health care and traditional knowledge and spiritual healing will be inaugurated by Paul Lyngdoh, Executive Member, Khasi Hill Autonomous District Council, on the occasion. The Sein Raij Niamtre is a socio-religious congregation of Jaintias believed to be the descendants of U Niaw Wasa and followers of Niamtre (religion). It strives to preserve and promote the cultural heritage and the philosophy of the indigenous religion of Jaintias in Meghalaya.
KJFA forms Mawkynrew Block unit
SHILLONG: The Khasi Jaintia Farmers’ Association (KJFA) formed its unit at Mawkynrew Block level on April 27 last at Jongsha village. The unit was confirmed by the president of the KJFA, Tring Mawlong, at a meeting attended by farmers of the Jongsha-Mawkynrew area. The meeting reiterated the need for farmers to come together in order to convey their problems to the government. President Langbor Nongpluh, Vice President Marphrad Kshiar, secretary Firstborn Nongrum, assistant secretary Tholy Longshiang and treasurer-Presibon Rynjah are the executive members of the unit. The farmers expressed their gratitude to the KJFA for forming the Mawkynrew block unit.
Ri Bhoi faces non-stop power cuts
SHILLONG: NPP North East Co-ordination Committee, Shillong, DS Malai wrote to Power Minister James Sangma on frequent power cuts in Nongpoh, Ri-Bhoi. In a statement, Malai mentioned that the frequent power cuts have affected daily life of the people while further mentioning that the electricity bills are unclear, irregular and without any proper meter reading and the unexpected increase in billing. Replying to the letter, the minister said that the matter is being looked into.
Management devp programme held
SHILLONG: A two-day Management Development Programme (MDP) for the 1997 and 1999 batches of Indian Revenue Service Officers organised by the School of Economics, Management and Information Sciences, North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in association with the National Academy of Customs, Indirect Taxes & Narcotics, Shillong at NEHU, concluded on Tuesday. The programme, inaugurated by Vice Chancellor, NEHU S K Srivastava and chaired by B Panda, Dean, SEMIS, focussed on familiarising the senior officers with the developmental imperatives of the region. As many as 16 officers participated in the programme where resource persons discussed about a wide range of issues, including leadership development, the Act East Policy, local government and investments in the region.
NE forum meet to decide future modalities
SHILLONG: The North East Forum for Indigenous People (NEFIP) held a meeting at NEHU on Tuesday to decide on future modalities of the forum. It may be mentioned that the NEFIP was formed in April at Imphal, Manipur. From Meghalaya, the Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisation (CoMSO) is affiliated to the forum. In the meeting which was held in Imphal, the NEFIP took up decisions regarding matters concerning the North East region including the Citizenship Amendment Bill, opposing any policies which are deemed to overwhelm the identity, culture, land ownership of the people of North East. The NEFIP also extends support to organisations demanding Inner Line Permit and other laws that will prevent influx of illegal immigrants.
1 held for raping minor
NONGSTOIN: The Nongstoin Police have arrested Goldenstar Langrin of Mawmarin, Maweit under West Khasi Hills for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl. The FIR that was filed on April 25 said that Langrin raped the girl in his vehicle. The police, after receiving the complaint, arrested the accused and also seized the vehicle on Monday.Police have registered a case against the accused under section 5(k)/6 of POCSO Act.
