SHILLONG: The Rs 2.6 crore seized from a vehicle in the city on Thursday, is suspected to be a payment either for gold or drugs, police said.
The police are on a drive against drugs and gold smuggling.
Earlier, over Rs 59 lakh and 450 grams of gold were seized by the police after arresting four people involved in the gold smuggling racket from Mawlai recently.
In a statement issued to the media on Friday, East Khasi Hills SP, Claudia Lyngwa said that based on reliable information that some persons were travelling from Guwahati to Shillong and are likely carrying some contraband, a team of police from the Special Cell and Cantonment Beat House were immediately deployed.
According to police, the team noticed the vehicle as they were proceeding towards Garikhana as it was going to Khlieh Iewduh.
On following the vehicle, police personnel saw the vehicle parked at a Parking Lot after which the team searched the vehicle and found two bags inside the vehicle which were wrapped with newspaper and cello tape.
On enquiring, the driver informed that it was cash in the packets and accordingly, the person and vehicle were brought to the S.P’s Office and on further interrogation, it was disclosed by the driver that he was only a courier and he is carrying the packets for a local lady from Laban.
Police said that the modus operandi was to park the vehicle at a certain place in Guwahati and then a person will deliver the cash to the vehicle and then it will come to Khlieh Iewduh where again someone would pick up the cash.
The packets were opened in the presence of income tax officers and bank officials.
