Employees demand shifting of SMB office to Jail Road

SHILLONG: The Shillong Municipal Employees’ Association (SMEA) has suggested that the main office of Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) may be shifted to its original location at Jail Road in the city.

This was proposed during a meeting of the executive committee meeting of the SMEA was held on May 24 with the main agenda being the shifting of the existing Shillong Municipal Board Office.  

In a statement issued here, the executive committee unanimously resolved to request the government to shift the present Shillong Municipal Office to its original place at Jail road.

The SMEA pointed to news in local dailies about the state Urban Affairs Department’s intention to shift the present Shillong Municipal Board office, located at Bishop Cotton Road, elsewhere.

The proposed temporary shifting of the office from Jail Road had was carried out lapsed about 7 years back and at that time it was committed that the completion of construction of an office and the shifting back would be carried out by 2012.  

The association stated that till date, no further action in this regard shifting back of the office had taken place even though 95% of the construction work and electrification for office purposes had been completed.
