MLCU holds seminar on prevailing social issues
SHILLONG: The Department of Theology and Department of Conflict Management and Peace Initiatives of Martin Luther Christian University in collaboration with the National Council of Churches India-NEI Action Desk conducted a two-day seminar on “Christian response to the prevailing social issues in Meghalaya” on the university’s premises on Thursday and Friday. The main objectives of the seminar is to provide a platform for presentation and deliberation on the various issues, analysing and formulating a solution to these issues as well as formulating certain potential action plans for churches and Christian institutions in the state. The seminar had leaders of different Christian denominations as presenters which each presentation being followed by observations by key respondents. The sub themes that were discussed included strengthening of family values; management and reduction of alcoholism, substance abuse and AIDs; prevention of sexual offences against children; promotion of education and employment; awareness and prevention of human trafficking; and gender equity in church and society.

World Food Safety Day
SHILLONG: The first ever World Food Safety Day, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 20, 2018 was observed by the Office of the Commissionerate of Food Safety, Health and Family Welfare under the theme ‘Food Safety, Everyone’s Business’ at the Conference Hall of the National Health Mission, Health Complex in Laitumkhrah on Friday. Addressing the gathering as chief guest A Warr, Director of Health Service (MI), Meghalaya said that the food safety day is celebrated to create awareness about the importance of food safety. “Unsafe food is a threat to human life,” Warr said and stressed on the need to strengthen the food testing unit in the state.  SN Sangma, joint commissioner of food safety, gave a presentation highlighting the five pillars under the theme.  Earlier, A Warr administered the world food safety pledge to all the participants in the presence of RE Donn, DHS (R), DBS Mukhim, assistant commissioner of food safety, East Khasi Hills and officials from the health department.

Plantation drive organised
SHILLONG: A plantation drive commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi was organised by Social Forestry Division, East Khasi Hills in collaboration with Directorate General Assam Rifles at Assam Rifles, Laitkor. C.P Marak, IFS Principal Chief Conservator of Forests & HoFF, Meghalaya Shillong and Major General Balwinder Singh Addll Director General, Assam Rifles attended the programme as chief guest and the guest of honour respectively. 1000 of saplings were planted at the Assam Rifles Station by the officials of the Forests Department, Directorate General Assam Rifles officials and students of Assam Rifles Public School and painting & drawing competition on the theme ‘Grow more trees’ was organised for the students of Assam Rifles Public School. Medicinal plants were also provided by the Forest & Environment Department for Herbal garden created by the Directorate General Assam Rifles Station at Laitkor.

One-day workshop held at Resubelpara
Resubelpara: One-day workshop was held to encourage children to discover their scientific temperament at Resubelpara Government U.P School on Friday. Resource person, Bhagirath Mahanta from State Council of Science, Technology and Environment, Shillong said the workshop is meant to train teachers in guiding children to prepare projects for the upcoming children’s science congress based on the given theme Science, Technology and Innovation for a Clean, Green and Healthy Nation. He added that the same workshop is being held in all the districts with the aim to improve the understanding of Science and arouse scientific curiosity among children. The programme was organised by the Planning Department, Resubelpara in collaboration with State Council of Science, Technology & Environment, Shillong.
