Suspected cattle smugglers assault members of KJBWA

NONGPOH/SHILLONG: Three members of the Khasi Jaintia Butcher Welfare Association (KJBWA) were seriously injured, while several others received minor injuries in an attacked by miscreants on Sunday at Lasharai, Mawlein Mawkhan in Ri Bhoi.
The KJBWA President, Generous Warlarpih informed that the incident happened at around 10 pm on Sunday while the members were patrolling on the highway to detect if any of their association members were onto violating the decision to boycott the buying cattle heads from Khanapara market.
Warlarpih, elaborated on the case saying that the members, on reaching Lasharai, discovered a truck parked on the highway whose occupants were the KJBWA members. During an effort to enquire about the owner of the truck and its destination, around 4 people driving a black Verna (no registration plate)
closed in and demanded to hit the members. Subsequently a large mob of people assaulted the group injuring three members grievously while others were left with minimal injuries.
He also informed that on getting information, leaders of the KJBWA from Shillong rushed to the spot along with Umiam police and found one dao. However, all the other members had fled off.
The injured were later found at Sumer and other areas and sent to hospital for treatment.
FKJGP condemns attack
Meanwhile, the FKJGP central body has condemned the assault on the members of the KJBWA by people suspected to be cattle smugglers.
The general secretary of KJBWA, Dundee Cliff Khongsit urged the state government to initiate an investigation into the assault and to nab the culprits.
The association has also filed an FIR at Umiam Police Station and urged the concerned authority to take this matter seriously and arrest those involved.
It may be mentioned that the KJBWA called a strike on the sale of beef from June 7 to protest against cattle smuggling to Bangladesh and issuing of fake certificate.
