SHILLONG: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Executive Member (EM) in charge of Market, Jambor War, has said the Executive Committee (EC) is looking for ways and means to come up with new markets and to repair and improve the existing ones in tune with modern times.
Speaking to a section of the press here, he said a proposal for funds has been placed with the Centre to establish market complexes in East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi districts.
He said, “We met the Tribal Affairs Minister, Arjun Munda, and placed a proposal of Rs 74 crore to set up market complexes in district headquarters, block headquarters and sub-divisions and also for improvement of rural markets.”
As for the markets under the jurisdiction of the KHADC, he said these are run by the Council, Himas, Elakas and private individuals. Markets run by the Himas, Elakas, raid and private individuals should get prior approval from the KHADC and they should pay 10 per cent to the KHADC after the end of the financial year.
The full-fledged markets run by the KHADC are the Iew Laitlyngkot and Iew Byrnihat from which the proceeds go directly to the KHADC’s exchequer.
