Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Thursday handed over the Meghalaya Entrepreneurship Recognition Award (Meg-Era) to Wanmon Tang, a resident of Madankynsaw village in West Jaintia Hills.
Wanmon is a partner of Laskein EFC and the proprietor of a small home-based enterprise known as Deisa Food Processing which produces candies from locally available fruits and vegetable, pickles, jam, fruit wine, juice, turmeric and chilli flakes.
Congratulating the lady entrepreneur, Conrad said that it was encouraging to see local women entrepreneurs taking the initiative to come up with start ups that take locally produced goods and add value to it.
‘‘There are many entrepreneurs who have started off with almost no support from anywhere and I am proud and happy that we as a government, through our various programs and initiatives for promoting entrepreneurship in the State, is being able to give these entrepreneurs the recognition that they deserve and the much needed support to take their businesses to the next level,’’ he said.
The Chief Minister also said that the government would soon come out with the procurement policy which will make it mandatory for different government offices, central government offices, institutions and companies in Meghalaya to procure a certain percentage of their procurement from local sellers.
‘‘The procurement policy will encourage and boost entrepreneurship in the state,’’ he added.
The government had also launched meghamart.com recently, which is an online platform to grant entrepreneurs wider access to markets beyond local buyers.
