SHILLONG: As the entry of bikers from Assam into Meghalaya draws attention, Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong, has said that if the ingress is merely for a joy ride, then it is a small issue.
Riders from the neighbouring state had entered Meghalaya on two occasions, defying the state government’s ban on interstate movement.
“We will communicate with the Deputy Commissioner of West Khasi Hills to take up the matter with his counterpart and sort it out,” Tynsong said.
Despite Chief Minister Conrad Sangma taking up the matter with his Assam counterpart, violations were still reported.
The state government is miffed with the repeated violation by residents of Assam and has termed the action as unacceptable.
Days after the first incident, on Sunday last, a group of bikers arrived at Mawsikar via Umwali from Assam, defying the ban on interstate travel.
The Superintendent of Police, West Khasi Hills, HG Lyngdoh, had also recently urged the SP of Kamrup not to allow outsiders to enter Langpih or any part of West Khasi Hills amidst the current crisis.
