SHILLONG: Chief Advisor to state government, DD Lapang and South Shillong MLA Sanbor Shullai on Saturday expressed grief over the loss of former KHADC CEM HS Shylla, who passed away on Friday.
In a statement, Lapang mourned the passing away of the ‘tall leader and stalwart’ Shylla who he said will be remembered as one of the state’s great statesmen, who has earned his place in history as champion of regionalism, democracy, equality and reconciliation.
Recalling his association with Shylla, Lapang said Shylla was a member of the cabinet when he was the chief minister of the state. ‘During his tenure as a minister, he has showed efficiency, decisiveness and the will to work and proved to be a great asset to the government,’ said Lapang.
Lapang also recalled the contribution of Shylla who was the Deputy Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
Praising the leader, Lapang said Shylla had served the state with distinction and made a lasting contribution.
‘His achievements are a testimony to how one man, through sheer courage and faith can rise up to the challenge and make a difference in lives of the people of Meghalaya and the region,’ he said.
He also praised Shylla’s effort in bringing back stranded youth of the state during COVID by sponsoring their flight and train tickets through his initiative Ka Sur U Paidbah.
‘His legacy reminds us that democracy and democratic values can never be taken for granted, he added. He also offered condolences to Shylla’s family.
In a statement, Shullai, said, ‘It greatly pains me to convey my sincere feeling and great sorrow at the sudden demise of my loving friend (Late) Hispreachering Son Shylla. He was a philosopher, a guide and a protector. His works in fields include unearthing of bogus ration cards, formation of the ‘Three Flags’ government in 1978 in order to end political instability in the state and efforts to bring the Clan Administration Bill to strengthen the matrilineal system and many others.’’
Shullai added that Shylla was dynamic and frank and was a superb orator. Calling Shylla a ‘courageous person’, Shullai said he was someone who was never afraid to call a spade a spade.
The MLA said Shylla will be remembered for his impeccable service and recalled his humanitarian qualities and faith in secularism and pluralism in the society. ‘He was a father and guardian to the poor, the needy and the weaker section,’ he said.
“The golden memory of your smile will ever linger in our hearts”, he concluded.
