State gears up for I-Day

SHILLONG/TURA: With less than a week left for Independence Day, the state is gearing up to display a low-key but befitting celebration as the pandemic shows no signs of slowing down.
In Shillong, an I-Day programme will be organised in Polo second ground at 9 am, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner M War Nongbri, said. The number of contingents in the programme, however, will be restricted.
“We are working out the programme and it will be ready by tomorrow (Tuesday),” the DC said.
Hinting that there may not be public gathering during the celebration, the DC, however, added that a decision in this regard is yet to be finalised.
On the other hand, the celebration in Tura will be held at the PA Sangma Stadium in Dakopgre from 9 am with limited number of participants, the West Garo Hills DC, Ram Singh, said.
“The programme will be held in adherence to all protocols including maintaining of social distance, wearing of masks, proper sanitisation besides restricting attendance of elderly person above 60 years and children below 10 years,” Singh informed.
He urged all department heads in West Garo Hills to organise cleaning drives in their respective office premises prior to the observation of Independence Day, on August 14.
Further, informing that plantation drives will be conducted and continued till August 15 by all departments, localities and even individuals, the DC urged all concerned to contact Assistant Director, Horticulture, P Sangma, and District Programme Manager, IBDLP, Valentine Hembron, with regard to collection of saplings.
