MAWKYRWAT, Nov 11: In a first in Meghalaya, the Dongkseh Self-Help Group (SHG) from Mawkyrwat in South West Khasi Hills has set up a sanitary napkins manufacturing unit, supported by the Meghalaya State Rural Livelihood Society (MSRLS) through the Stree Swabhiman Scheme.
Dongkseh SHG is one of the SHGs under the ‘Long A We’ Village Organisation, Mawkyrwat, promoted by the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) through the MSRLS.
The Unit was inaugurated by South West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Cara Kharkongor on Tuesday in the presence of Mawkyrwat BDO FB Basan, District Mission Manager, MSRLS, Eson A Khongrymmai, among others.
Speaking on the occasion, Kharkongor, while lauding the efforts of the members of the SHG, said the group did not wait for government schemes but took the mantle in their hands to ensure better healthcare for women in the area and the district as a whole.
Meanwhile, Basan urged upon the other SHGs under the ‘Long A We’ Village Organisation to follow in the footsteps of Dongkseh SHG by establishing their own business as suitable to their ability.
The District Mission Manager of MSRLS, Eson A Khongrymmai, said that Dongkseh SHG was one of the most effective SHGs in the South West Khasi Hills which has set an example for other groups in the area. He added that there are many families within Mawkyrwat who have benefitted from the SHGs’ efforts.
