Shillong, Jan 25: The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Meghalaya, concluded its 4th State Conference held on January 23 at Tpep Pale Hall, Jowai. NEHU Vice Chancellor, Prof Henry Lamin, was the chief guest while Heisakaru Lato was the guest of honour.
Saket Bahuguna was the special guest at the Conference, which witnessed the presence of 92 delegates. The Conference came out with a resolution for proper implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in Meghalaya.
The resolution focused on some critical areas such as the absence of state-funded medical, engineering and other professional institutions in Meghalaya.
Giving the thumbs up to Centre’s move in introducing the NEP 2020 after 34 long years with an aim to achieve full human potential and to develop an equitable and just society and to promote overall development, the ABVP said the policy has also created new opportunities for students in higher education, which Meghalaya should take advantage of.
The Conference resolved that since higher education plays an integral role in the growth and development of the country and quality education adds to the holistic development of an individual, institutions of higher learning under NEP will help students to avail the opportunities offered.
The NEP 2020 envisions a complete overhaul and re-energising of the higher education system to overcome present challenges and thereby deliver high quality education with equity and inclusion.
Referring to Meghalaya’s higher education scenario, the Resolution says ABVP will work at bringing in more engineering, medical and management institutions funded and managed by the state government. It said that the existing central institutions cannot accommodate the local students which, therefore, compels them to move out of the state to pursue higher education and sometimes to drop out due financial problems or adjustment issues.
The Resolution pointed out that even NEHU does not offer postgraduation in several disciplines. In this regard, the ABVP Meghalaya will put forward the demand for higher educational institutes which will cater to the needs of the youths.
Later the ABVP re-elected Lekhi A Sangma as the state president and Nibiang Sumer are the new state secretary of ABVP Meghalaya.
