JOWAI, March 14: Various pressure groups in East Jaintia Hills, while condemning the suspected rape and murder of a sixteen-year old Class 10 student, whose body was recovered from a jungle at Shi-Kilo (1-kilo) under Khliehriat Police Station on Saturday evening, have demanded a proper investigation, while urging the police to ensure that the culprit(s) are nabbed and punished as per law.
The groups include All Hynniewtrep People United Front, Jaintia Women Awakening Movement, All Meghalaya People Organisation, Jaintia National Council (JNC), Jaintia Students’ Union Khliehriat Circle, HYC-EJH Circle and JYF-EJH Circle besides others.
The JNC said that “weakness of the law implementation agency has discouraged womenfolk in the society”, while reminding that a similar incident had occurred in the district during December last year in which an 18-year-old Class IX student was found murdered in a jungle a day after she did not return home from school. “If the police fail to nab those that committed this heinous crime, it’s no doubt that it will be an encouragement to other criminals. We want our police to be professional enough to nab all those involved so that the law can punish them accordingly”, the JNC added.
