Prominent educationist no more

SHILLONG, June 1: Harlismon Tariang, a Shillong-based educationist and retired Vice Principal of Lady Keane College, passed away on Tuesday morning at her residence in Mawlai Nonglum. She was also a lecturer for a brief period with St. Mary’s College in 1958. She was around 85 years old.
Fondly remembered as ‘Miss HK’, Harlismon Tariang was also the founding member of Indian Council Social Welfare Meghalaya Chapter when Meghalaya attained its Statehood in 1972. As founding member, she had represented the Council on two occasions abroad at Brighton in U.K. and Bangkok, Thailand.
Further, she was also the president of Seng Kynthei Mawlai Pyllun and Seng Kynthei Mawlai Nonglum for many terms and years. Seng Kynthei Mawlai Pyllun, under her president-ship was conferred with an award from Delhi for ensuring that the ration card holders get quality food from the fair price shops. With the cash award, Tariang instituted the Merit Award to felicitate meritorious students of Class 10.
She was the wife of SD Khongwir and mother of Alva, late Raymond, Weishavina & Arshavina.
Her funeral service will be held at 1 pm at her residence on Wednesday and she will be laid to rest at the Cemetery of Mawlai Presbyterian Church at Mawlai Nonglum.
