SHILLONG, June 21: Three weeks after efforts began to rescue six trapped miners at Krem Ule in East Jaintia Hills, the operations have borne no fruit save the retrieval of an unidentified body on Wednesday.
Over 18 lakh litres of water has been pumped out of the two inter-connected mine shafts but the water level is yet to recede to a depth suitable for Navy personnel to dive in. On Monday, the rescue teams consisting of SDRF and NDRF personnel verified the water level and found that it had increased by three feet.
On the request of the Navy personnel, NDRF and SDRF personnel spent most of the day removing two operational submersible pipes, two underwater motors and associated pipes and ropes.
In addition, visual inspection of the steel wires and accessories fixed to the cranes was undertaken.
