SHILLONG, June 30: The Department of Statistics, Shillong College, virtually celebrated the National Statistics Day on Wednesday during which Father of Modern Indian Statistics, PC Mahalanobis, was remembered.
According to a statement, the programme was attended by students and faculty of the college, research scholars of North-Eastern Hill University and others.
Principal of Shillong College, Dr E Kharkongor, during the programme, highlighted the importance of data in contemporary data-driven world for socio-economic framework, policy-making and other areas.
She also spoke about the works and contribution of PC Mahalanobis and how he was instrumental in formulating India’s strategy for industrialisation and the Second Five-Year Plan.
Assistant Director, Directorate of Census Operations, Meghalaya, MHA, JR Swear, on the other hand, encouraged students to work hard and develop more interest in the subject of Statistics.
PC Mahalanobis was an Indian scientist and statistician from West Bengal. He is best remembered for the Mahalanobis distance, a statistical measure, and for being one of the members of the first Planning Commission of free India. ‘
He made pioneering studies in anthropometry in India, founded the Indian Statistical Institute and contributed to the design of large-scale sample surveys.
For his contributions, Mahalanobis has been considered the Father of Modern Statistics in India.
