MAWKYRWAT, July 22: The Hill Farmers’ Union (HFU) has asked the state government to consider free education till undergraduate level for children of farmers and students belonging to poor families.
President of HFU, Commander Shangpliang, said this after donating books and money to a 23-year-old UG student who comes from a needy family in Photjaud village, South West Khasi Hills.
Speaking to media persons, Shangpliang said he felt elated to help the student who was preparing for fourth semester of BA examinations, but without books.
He also bewailed about the hurdles faced by students belonging to poor families and children of farmers, especially due to online learning in view of COVID-19 situation.
“I am very concerned about the education system in Meghalaya, especially after the central report that shows that our state as the worst performer in school education. We all know that the best gift that any parent can give to their children is education, and we don’t want to see students, who are eager of studying, dropping out just because the parents cannot afford their education,” he said.
“I don’t believe that being poor can prevent you from achieving your goal,” an upbeat Shangpliang added.
