SHILLONG, Sep 3: Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem on Friday questioned the state government on the delay in notifying the members of the joint committee on the interstate border dispute between Meghalaya and Assam.
Expressing discontent, the MLA said that such a delay only bears witness to the state government’s lack of enthusiasm to address the issue, especially when it has been over a month since the chief ministerial-level meeting was held. “We would like to see a proactive approach from both sides. This has to happen quickly, especially to resolve the issues in the six identified areas of difference in Ri Bhoi,” he said, adding that the state government should be firm that no new area of difference should come out from the ones already identified.
Syiem also argued that skirmishes have been reported from Iongkhuli even though it is not an area of difference. “To keep the border peaceful we need support from locals while the government needs to stress on keeping vigil,” he said.
