SHILLONG, Sep 9: In a startling incident, a Shillong-based elderly man is all set to knock on the door of a court to claim parental maintenance after he and his wife were allegedly deserted by their two sons.
The 65-year-old man, who had once served in Merchant Navy, told reporters on Thursday that despite financially funding the education of his two sons, they were not keen on either looking after them or paying visit to the family.
It may be mentioned that the man, who has five children, is now contemplating taking the legal route to seek maintenance allowance.
Informing that his two sons are central government employees, the 65-year-old said that they owe him around Rs 10 lakh, including the interest for the last 10 years.
The man, who hails from Nongrim Hills, said that he has asked his lawyer to file a case in the court against his sons, which may take around a week or so.
His other three children include a daughter, his elder son who lives in Bengaluru and has health issues, and his youngest child who stays with him and is unemployed. His wife currently lives with the daughter.
The man, citing anonymity, also informed that he had tried filing a police complaint earlier against his sons but the police did not register the case stating that that it is more to do with the court.
He rued that he and his wife somehow managed to survive for 5-6  years but then with the onset of COVID-19 pandemic, their survival became arduous. Coupled with that, the couple was not visited by their two sons when the former was reeling under the pandemic.
The 65-year-old also lamented that nobody discusses about the welfare of parents in Meghalaya.
