MAWKYRWAT, Sep 17: Concerned over the increasing cases of crimes in Mawkyrwat, South West Khasi Hills, which perhaps is a result of drug addiction, the Khasi Student’s Union (KSU) Mawkyrwat Circle has requested the state government to set up a rehabilitation centre here to give direction to misled youths.
The Union revealed that in the last few days, it apprehended some youths from Mawkyrwat area, who were involved in stealing.
After interrogation, the Union discovered that they were drug addicts who were also involved in many criminal activities.
The Union said that it has reached out to parents of such misguided youths, who, after discussions, have expressed willingness to work together with the Union to fight the menace.
Subsequently, the Union decided to send the youths to a rehabilitation centre.
KSU leader Rutherford Lyngdoh has flagged the easy availability of drugs and other psychotropic substances in Mawkyrwat area as grave danger to the society, especially in consideration of the spike in number of crimes. “This happens because so many youths have fell victims to the habit of taking drugs,” he said.
Lyngdoh, thus, called upon different NGOs, village leaders, church leaders, Seng Longkmie (women organisation), Seng Samla (youth organisation) to work in unison to fight the problem.
