Panama Football Federation punished for homophobic chants
Moscow, Oct 17: The Panamanian Football Federation has announced it was sanctioned by the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) for homophobic chanting by its fans during the 2022 World Cup qualifiers. The incidents took place in September when Panama hosted the games against Costa Rica and Mexico as part of the 2022 World Cup qualifier. The FIFA Disciplinary Committee ruled that Panama’s national team would play the next home World Cup qualifying match with El Salvador without spectators as punishment, the Panamanian Football Federation said in a statement. It was also fined 50,000 Swiss Francs ($54,148) for the incidents. (UNI)
Spain wins FINA World Women’s Water Polo Championships
Jerusalem, Oct 17: Spain beat Green 10-5 in the final to claim gold in the FINA World Women’s Junior Water Polo Championships held in Israel’s coastal city of Netanya. The Spaniards went from 1-1 to 5-1 in the first quarter and scored another in the second quarter. Spanish captain Paula Camus’s two goals helped Spain enter the final quarter 9-4 with a five-goal advantage. Greece responded through Eleni Kanetidou in the final two minutes. Camus and Ariadne Ruiz scored three goals each for Spain. Earlier, Hungary won bronze after a 12-10 victory over Italy. (UNI)
China win Uber Cup with 3-1 over defending champs Japan
Aarhus, Oct 17: China beat defending champions in the Uber Cup final with a 3-1 victory. Japan fought all the way, missing some key players, but China were superior across the four contested matches on Saturday. This is the 15th time China have won the competition. The match pivoted on the longest match in the Uber Cup history when Chen Qing Chan/Jia Yi Fan won their doubles match. In the second doubles match China sealed the victory, having to save four game points to take the trophy. (AP)
Kamani, Sanjeev record victories in World Snooker Qualifiers
Mumbai, Oct 17: Amee Kamani of Madhya Pradesh and Varsha Sanjeev of Tamil Nadu recorded contrasting victories in their opening round ‘Y’ Camp (1st leg) match of GSC World Snooker Qualifiers, a BSFI National Selection Tournament, here on Sunday. Kamani dashed the challenge from seasoned campaigner Chitra Magimairaj of Karnataka by romping to straight frames 3-0 victory. On an adjacent table, the Tamil Nadu cueist Varsha was engaged in a grueling battle with Maharashtra’s Arantxa Sanchis to pull through with a thrilling 3-2 victory. (PTI)
