NONGPOH, Oct 20: A man was killed and another was severely injured after a Guwahati-bound vehicle collided head-on with a truck at Umtyrnah under Umroi Bypass.
According to sources from the police, the incident happened around 8:30 am on Wednesday when the vehicle (AS-11G-7189) driven by one Azaz Ahsan Ramani of Badarpur, Assam, reportedly went on the wrong side of the road while proceeding towards Guwahati from Silchar. As a result, the vehicle rammed into the truck (NL-01-AA-9137), leaving Ramani dead and another occupant grievously injured.
While the body of the deceased has been shifted to Nongpoh Civil Hospital for autopsy, the survivor continues to undergo treatment at Shillong Civil Hospital.
Truck overturns
Meanwhile, a truck loaded with charcoal overturned on NH-6 at Saiden village in Ri Bhoi on the same day after hitting the median divider of the road.
Interestingly, the number plate of the truck was removed and both the driver and helper fled the scene after the incident. Police are on the hunt to trace the driver and the truck owner.
