SHILLONG, Dec 22: The Shillong Electric crematorium located in Jhalupara here has been under renovation since the last two-three months and pressure seems to be mounting on the government to complete the renovation work at the earliest.
Sources informed that it has been two-three months since the work for the replacement of the furnace and repair of the crematorium had begun. Now, the trial for one of the new furnaces, which has been installed in the crematorium, is under way. Sources said that bodies, as of now, are being cremated in the electric crematorium as well as in the Shamshan Ghat in Mawbah.
The company which is implementing the renovation work of the electric crematorium will hand over the project to the Urban Affairs department after which it will be handed over to the management of the Shillong Electric Crematorium.
It may be recalled that the Shillong Electric Crematorium, the first crematorium in the North East region, was commissioned in the year 2007.
