SHILLONG, Jan 4: Stepping onto the second day of their weeklong strike, GVK EMRI workers under the umbrella of the Meghalaya EMRI Workers Union on Tuesday raised their demand for regular salary and job security from the government.
President of the Union mentioned that they are aiming for an increase in salary along with the security of their jobs which must be ensured by the authorities at the earliest.
Showing his support to the cause of the Union, Congress MLA PT Sawkmie termed the government’s reaction as unfortunate and asked it to call the agitating employees for discussions on resolving their grievances.
Meanwhile, officials from GVK EMRI admitted that their services have been affected after the employees sat for the strike on Monday.
Launching the strike from Monday midnight, around 250 EMRI workers sat for the strike to register their dissent over unpaid services.
Alleging that promises have been made by the firm right from 2018, the unpaid services that they have been rendering for so long has put the workers in a difficult position.
The agitating workers had earlier alleged that they are earning less salary, while job security is another aspect they are looking for.
According to reliable sources, the state government has reached out to the agitating employees over the phone urging them to keep the strike on status quo.
The government had maintained that healthcare services should not be disturbed amidst the pandemic.
