SHILLONG, Jan 21: Civil society groups from Meghalaya on Friday condemned the attack on bystanders and shopkeepers by a group of masked miscreants at Lumdiengjri.
Thma U Rangli-Juki (TUR) member, Angela Rangad, said that incidents like this point to the failure of policing.
“TUR condemns the dastardly attack on people in Lumdiengjri area by miscreants. This act of terror is meant to create an atmosphere of fear in the multicultural society of Shillong and needs to condemn by all right-thinking citizens of Meghalaya,” said Rangad.
“Incidents like these need to be investigated into quickly and perpetrators of such cowardly acts need to be speedily brought to book and punished as per law,” she added.
Pointing out that this is not the first time that such an act of lawlessness has occurred in an area which is close to a police station, Rangad said, “This incident also points to the failure of policing when it comes to providing security to common citizens of Meghalaya.”
Meanwhile, the Civil Society Women Organization (CSWO) has also condemned the incident and demanded that arrest of the culprits.
“We strongly condemn this act of cowardice and demand to find the culprits immediately. Such acts of violence and terror should not be allowed in a civil society,” said CSWO president, Agnes Kharshiing.
It may be mentioned that on Thursday evening, between 4 to 4:30 pm, several people were injured when a gang of around eight unidentified miscreants assaulted them at Lumdiengjri.
Three of the injured were brought to the Shillong Civil Hospital, and the family of one of them, Chandan Paul (55), who is a resident of Lower Mawprem, claimed that he had been stabbed.
The two other injured, Nurjul Mullah (30) and Abdul S Chaudhary (38), who are residents of Garikhana, suffered injuries on the face and the back. Two of the injured are shopkeepers.
