AMPATI, Feb 6: At least three persons — a 50-year-old man, 35-year-old woman and a three-year-old child — were killed and 20 people were injured after the driver of the vehicle they were travelling in lost control and rolled into the nearby paddy field near the town of Ampati in South West Garo Hills.
Among the injured, nine have been referred to Tura Civil Hospital in West Garo Hills.
The incident took place at about noon on Sunday near Jelbongpara under Betasing Outpost in South West Garo Hills. As per information received from police sources, the pick-up truck carrying the people was proceeding towards Wadagre under the same outpost.
While 35-year-old Natje Sangma and the three-year-old died on the spot, 50-year-old as Prodison Marak succumbed to his injuries in Tura Civil Hospital.
The driver, who also escaped with minor injuries, later said that there was a mechanical failure, due to which he lost control while negotiating a turn.
“The other 20 people in the vehicle suffered minor injuries. While most of them are being treated at Ampati, nine of them are currently being treated in Tura. Their condition is said to be stable. A case has been registered on the matter,” said acting superintendent of police, Ringrang TG Momin.
