Tura, Feb 18: A Capacity Building Training Programme cum Workshop on Agri-Entrepreneurship Development for Eri Farmers was on Friday, held at the Sericulture Farm in New Tura. The programme was organised by Incubation Centre, NEHU, Tura Campus and funded by ICAR, NIBSM, Raipur Chattisgarh in collaboration with P4 Unit, Central Silk Board, Tura and District Sericulture Office, Tura.
Speaking on the occasion as Chief Guest, Pro-Vice Chancellor, NEHU Tura Campus, G Singaiah assured that the Incubation Centre would extend all possible assistance to the Eri Farmers of the region such as financial assistance and training programmes, workshops on improved cocoon rearing, systematic and economic plantation for rearing silkworms, training personnel for weavers so as to increase the productivity unit in the area. Along with Eri farming, he urged the farmers to practice integrated farming like piggery, poultry, fishery, etc so that they can reap multiple benefits simultaneously and thereby enhance the economy with these activities. Further, advising them to think positive and work hard with dedication, he said that nothing is impossible and one can achieve success only with sheer determination and hardwork.
In her brief speech, District Sericulture Officer, Tura Sanre G Momin highlighted the important role of Eri farmers for the production of Silk fabric and hand woven fabrics of ethnic design, etc. in the district. Addressing the challenges faced by the farmers, she urged them to do rearing sincerely and also encouraged them to reel, spin and weave in order to boost the production of silk in the district. Stating that the department occasionally provides materials and financial assistance to the farmers, she said that they should make an effort to expand their business activity utilising local labour and resources.
Meanwhile, a Noted Entrepreneur and Weaver of Tura, Vivian A Sangma explained in detailed about the ability to provide gainful occupation for the Eri farmers without dislodging them from their homesteads adding that they should not only rear cocoons, but move a step further by practising to reel and spin thread out of the cocoon and weave into fabric materials which can provide enough income for their family.
As part of the programme, the Chief Guest along with other dignitaries also distributed racks, tarpaulin, secateurs and torch lights for all the beneficiaries selected from different zones of the district.
