Exhibitions, fairs commemorate Natl Science Day in state

SHILLONG/RI-BHOI, Feb 28: The state on Monday hosted elaborate programmes as it celebrated the National Science Day. Different functions pertaining to science, invention and technology were held in order to mark the discovery of the Raman effect by Indian physicist and Nobel prize winner CV Raman in 1928. The theme for National Science Day 2022 is ‘Integrated Approach in Science and Technology for Sustainable Future’.
Joining the nationwide celebrations, the Agastya International Foundation, a Shillong-based NGO, in collaboration with Directorate of School Education and Literacy (DSEL), organised a ‘Science Fair’ at the Shillong Secondary School in compliance with COVID-19 protocols.
A total of 30 students from Shillong Secondary and Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School partook in the fair and demonstrated models based on science and astronomy. The fair was also attended by teachers, students and parents from various other schools.
The participants were also provided with certificates as a token of appreciation during the fair.
The Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh GDC, Survey of India organised an exhibition on topographical mapping in its office premises at Malki. Various activities of Survey of India like Digital Photogrammetric work Stations, Modern Surveying Instruments, Computer Aided Cartography (CAC), Demonstration on GPS, Remote Sensing, Importance of Maps in our day-to-day life and Utilization of Drone data for SVAMITVA (Survey of Village Abadi and Mapping with Improvised Technology in Village Areas) were made part of the exhibition.
Modern surveying instruments like Total-Station, GPS, Digital Level and latest Drone based data processing for SVAMITVA project was also demonstrated in the exhibition.
Students from the various schools from the city participated in the event with great zeal and enthusiasm.
To mark the day, Kendriya Vidyalaya, Happy Valley also organised an event where resource persons delivered talks on the ‘Raman effect’ and life and contributions of CV Raman.
As part of the programme, a plantation drive and a quiz competition was also organised by the authorities. Meritorious students who brought laurels to the school by securing different scholarships, making scientific achievements and participating in science congress were felicitated in the programme. A quiz competition was also held.
In keeping with the day’s significance, USTM in collaboration with Regional Institute of Science &Technology also organised a programme which was presided over by Prof. GD Sharma, Vice Chancellor of the USTM as the chief guest. and technology.
Various competitions were held amongst the students including debate competition, poster making competition, and extempore speech competition. The Vice-Chancellor distributed the prizes and certificates amongst the winners of the competitions.
