SHILLONG, March 5: The Justice T. Vaiphei inquiry commission probing the killing of former HNLC leader Cheristerfield Thangkhiew has so far held 14 hearings. The fifteenth is scheduled for March 11-12.
An official told The Shillong Times here on Saturday that the commission has examined five government witnesses including the East Jaintia Hills SP, Jagpal Singh Dhanoa who led the August 13 operation in Shillong’s Kynton Massar locality. The witnesses for the next hearing will be members of the family of the slain former extremist.
The official said Justice Veiphei, lawyers and police personnel visited Thangkhiew’s house where the action had taken place.
“The sketch map depicting where the shooter was and where the victim fell has to be a part of the report that will be submitted by the inquiry commission,” the official said.
The commission is optimistic about submitting its report to the state government within the next three months.
The state government had on February 20 given an extension of three months to the commission for completing the inquiry.
The probe was ordered on August 16 last year after a public outcry over the death of Thangkhiew, who was shot by the police in an early morning raid.
