SHILLONG, May 6: The interstate boundary issue may dominate the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance’s coordination committee meeting likely to be held on May 11.
“The CM is likely to fix May 11 for the MDA coordination committee meeting and call all the party presidents to attend,” state BJP chief Ernest Mawrie said after meeting Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday. He said a lot of pressing issues necessitated the meeting. “The most important of these issues to be discussed is the interstate boundary dispute,” he added.
“I will ask about the status of the ongoing inquiries (into various irregularities),” Mawrie said.
Asked if the improper implementation of the central schemes will also be raised, he said: “Bah AL Hek is chairman of our Central Scheme Monitoring Committee and we are waiting for his report to take up the matter.”
The MDA coordination meeting has attained significance as some of the National People’s Party’s coalition partners have been questioning the boundary deal with Assam on six of the 12 disputed sectors taken up in the first phase of discussions.
The United Democratic Party, BJP and KHNAM have asked the government to revisit the areas where the border residents are protesting the memorandum of understanding (MoU). The People’s Democratic Front is also likely to take up the issue with the chief minister.
The CM has maintained that revisiting the MoU, endorsed by Assam, is not an option.
A few days ago, the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council formed a coordination committee to explore the possibilities of filing a petition in the court against the boundary deal.
