SHILLONG, June 13: The United Democratic Party (UDP) will eye more than six seats which they bagged in the 2018 Assembly elections, and party president Metbah Lyngdoh is hopeful that the party will perform better particularly in view of the faith people have in the party.
“But I am sure that we are going to do better after seeing the faith of the people at the party. We will work hard to gain from this momentum since the people are looking at the party as an alternative to take the state forward,” said Lyngdoh, who was speaking at a function to formally welcome former UDP MLA from Mawkynrew, Remington Pyngrope, and his party supporters to the UDP on Monday.
On the occasion, Lyngdoh also announced that Pyngrope, who resigned from the National People’s Party, will be the official candidate of the UDP to contest from Mawkynrew constituency in the Assembly elections in 2023.
“We have witnessed the formation of a coalition government after every election. But the opportunity to allow the UDP to form the government on its own this time round would depend on the voters,” he said, while expressing joy in welcoming Pyngrope back in the party fold.
“I hope that we are going to win the Mawkynrew seat again with Pyngrope’s candidature,” the UDP president said.
Remington Pyngrope, in his address, informed the gathering that he decided to join the UDP after consulting with his supporters.
“After being with the NPP, I realised that all national parties are the same. Even in the NPP, everything has to be decided by the party high command,” the former Mawkynrew MLA added.
Others present on the occasion include party vice president, Allantry Dkhar, president of Women’s Wing, Pretty Kharpyngrope, and vice president of UDP East Khasi Hills, O Suin, among others.
