Two convicted of rape, sexual assault in WGH

SHILLONG, July 1: Two persons have been convicted by local courts in West Garo Hills in two different cases of sexual assault of a minor girl and rape of a woman.
West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police, VS Rathore said on March 14 2020, the Tura Women Police Station had received information that one Rasthy A Sangma had been sexually assaulting a minor girl at his residence for one year.
The SP said a case was registered immediately and investigation was entrusted to WPSI Salmay R Marak. The chargesheet was submitted on May 12 the same year.
After trial, the Court of Special Judge (POCSO), West Garo Hills, Tura found the accused guilty and convicted him. Subsequently, the court on June 27 this year sentenced him to rigorous imprisonment of 20 years with fine of Rs 25,000.
The convict was allegedly involved in another case of similar nature registered in Tura Women Police Station under the POCSO Act. The trial of that case is ongoing.
In the other case, the Tura Women Police Station had on October 4, 2016 received information that one Beatbeat Ch Marak raped a woman and assaulted her.
The accused had allegedly asked the woman not to disclose the matter to anyone and threatened her with dire consequences.
After a case was registered, WPSI Renu D Momin conducted the investigation. The charge sheet was submitted on July 31, 2017.
After trial, the Court of District & Sessions Judge, West Garo Hills, Tura found the accused guilty and convicted him.
On May 31, it sentenced him to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 7 years with fine of Rs 10,000. For the offence under Section 506 Part II and 323 of the IPC, the court sentenced him to undergo simple imprisonment for 2 years and one year respectively.
The SP said the convictions are the results of meticulous investigation by the police personnel, the public prosecutors who led the prosecution of the cases and Good Samaritans who came forward to assist the police during investigation.
