SHILLONG, July 24: A total of 3,200 bottles of Phensedyl cough syrup were recovered from a jungle in Jatrakona under South Garo Hills district by the Border Security Force (BSF) Meghalaya on Saturday.
The Phensedyl bottles seized during the BSF’s joint operation amounts to around Rs 6 lakh.
According to the BSF, it received inputs about a large quantity of Phensedyl hidden in the forest area at Jatrakona which was intended to be smuggled to Bangladesh through the international border.
Since liquor consumption is prohibited in Bangladesh, there is high demand for this codeine-based syrup in the neighbouring country.
The public relations officer (PRO) of BSF said that the BSF and Border Guards Bangladesh exchange monthly data of seizure of Phensedyl, drugs, and narcotics by the two forces to identify vulnerable routes and patches and make a coordinated plan for curbing this menace.
