One phone call
Not one, not two but there probably have been multiple times when Shillongites have been posted with one request by a random fellow — “Bhai, ek call karega. Phone do na aapka.” (I want to make a call. Please give me your phone).
Albeit the need for a phone call may seem honest, it however looks otherwise, at least on the face of it.
Now, the moment of truth…
Imagine a scrawny and unhygienic person with bloodshot eyes, dilated pupils, who is dressed in torn and mucky apparel staring at you from a distance. And when you walk past him, he comes in front of you to ask from you your phone to make a call. What would you do on an impulse?
The SJ team leaves for its readers to decide.
However, the general introspective thought on this involves fear that replying to such requests may lead to something untoward, particularly if you snub them without giving a chance to make a call with your phone.
One time, this man used his wit to overcome this fear and managed to provide help to the person wanting to make a call using his phone.
The man calmly asked him to recite the phone number, dialed it, and put the call on speaker. This may be one way of dealing with such a situation.

FOOT-PATH? Several two-wheelers are parked on the footpath at Police Bazar. If footpaths, meant for pedestrians, are invaded by two-wheelers, should the people tread on the road? (ST)
