SHILLONG, Aug 30: In what can be termed as a stern warning, the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Chief Executive Member (CEM), Titosstarwell Chyne, on Tuesday, reminded the shopkeepers in Iewduh to comply with the Council’s order prohibiting the sale of plastics.
Stating that surprise checking will be conducted to ensure that the order is being adhered to, the CEM said that trading licence of the shopkeepers will be revoked if it is found that the order is being violated.
Chyne was speaking at a programme on Tuesday, where he laid the foundation stone for construction of the new wholesale vegetable market at Iewduh.
He also inaugurated the newly renovated traditional worship place where traditional annual or periodic sacrifices are performed by the Dorbar U Syiem of Hima Mylliem, besides the PA system and CCTV cameras installed at Iewduh.
“We will not hesitate to cancel the trading licence if any of the shops owned by the non-tribals are found selling plastics,” he said.
Meanwhile, the CEM also said that any illegal sale of illicit liquor, gambling or any other illegal activities will not be allowed inside Iewduh market.
“We need to protect the name of this oldest and largest traditional market,” KHADC CEM added.
After inaugurating the facilities, Chyne explained that CCTV cameras at Iewduh are necessary for security, while adding that theft cases in particular are being reported every now and then.
He also said that the KHADC is happy to approve the proposal of constructing the new wholesale vegetable market proposed by the office of Syiem of Mylliem.
Others present on the occasion included Executive Member in-charge Market, Grace Mary Kharpuri, Executive Member in-charge Elaka, Jambor War, and Acting Syiem of Hima Mylliem, Ainam Sing Syiem.
