SHILLONG, Sep 12: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Monday said Meghalaya would have to wait for a direction from the Centre on the demand for the implementation of the inner-line permit (ILP) in the state.
Replying to a Zero Hour notice moved by Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem on a news item published in The Shillong Times titled “ILP demand gathers steam ahead of polls”, the CM said he was sure that the Ministry of Home Affairs was studying all the aspects.
“From our side, we have shown our seriousness by passing a resolution and the matter is now with the MHA,” he said.
Reiterating that the state government had submitted a memorandum to Union Home Minister Amit Shah with the ILP as one of the major demands, the CM said the resolution passed by the Assembly was sent to the MHA.
The CM also maintained that the demand for ILP grew stronger after Parliament passed the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019.
Syiem had earlier asked why it was taking so long for the MHA to examine the demands and wanted to know if there were any objections to the demand from any quarters.
The Meghalaya Assembly had in 2019 adopted a resolution for the implementation of the ILP in the state.
