SHILLONG, Oct 18: NPP leader and Jowai MLA Wailadmiki Shylla on Tuesday said his party would emulate the UDP’s 1998 record of winning all the seven Assembly seats straddling the twin districts of Jaintia Hills.
The contest in the 2023 Assembly polls will again be between the NPP and the UDP, he said.
Shylla said he was confident of winning his seat for the second straight time because of the connection he has maintained with the people. The other six NPP candidates would be in a similar position, he added.
“History will be repeated but it will be in favour of the NPP,” he said.
He said the people of the Jowai constituency have always given a second chance to their representatives as they understand it is not possible for an MLA to do everything during one term.
He cited the example of Roytre C Laloo who was an MLA for 25 years and Ma Sing Mulieh who represented the constituency for 10 years.
Shylla said he has never been far from his people during his tenure so far.
“I am doing my normal daily routine such as following up on the schemes, which I want should reach the people before the model code of conduct comes into effect,” he said.
“I have put in a lot of effort but it will never be enough. I am thankful to the chief minister and the government for assisting a first-timer like me,” he added.
Shylla said he got the sanction for interior roads, the beautification of Jowai town and Rs 35 crore to revamp the tourism circuit in Thadlaskein by providing accommodation for visitors who did not have the option of staying over.
He claimed many stretches of the roads that were in a deplorable condition have been addressed and he also managed to complete the Umngot water supply scheme started in 2003-04.
