SHILLONG, Dec 16: NPP national president and Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma seems to have stepped on to the wrong side of the anti-defection law by publicly announcing the candidature of Jimmy D Sangma from Tikrikilla constituency on an NPP ticket. Jimmy, who represents the Tikrikilla seat, is a Trinamool Congress MLA.
“Great to be at Paham in Tikrikilla, West Garo Hills, after a month to address supporters of the NPP where we also welcomed new members to the party. Apprised them about the work of the NPP-led MDA Government & urged their support to our candidate Sh. Jimmy D Sangma,” Conrad tweeted on Friday.
It is an open secret that the sitting TMC legislator will quit the party and switch over to the NPP, but the announcement of his candidature from the NPP violates the anti-defection law, said an official from the Assembly Secretariat, adding that an MLA has to resign from his parent organisation before contesting from another party.
“If anybody files a complaint it will attract the anti-defection law,” the official said.
The Assembly official also recalled that three legislators had recently resigned before joining another political party.
