SHILLONG, Jan 2: Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee president Vincent Pala on Monday accused BJP for its ‘double speak’ and said the party is trying to divide India on religious and communal lines which is detrimental for the country.
Pala said that the BJP, an advocate of the Uniform Civil Code, is vouching for one country and one religion. He also criticised the saffron party for going full throttle with its plan to introduce the controversial single law across the nation.
In December, chaos ensued in the Rajya Sabha as the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Rajasthan MP Kirodi Lal Meena introduced the Uniform Civil Code in India Bill, 2020 in the Rajya Sabha as a Private Member Bill amid stiff opposition.
The proposed law seeks to do away with religion-based personal laws. Even the Vishwa Hindu Parishad recently demanded a stringent law to ban illegal conversions and implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the country.
Stating that the BJP is trying to portray that all Hindus belong to them, Pala while reacting to the recent letter issued by the SP of Special Branch, Assam Police, said that he thinks just the opposite.
Pala asked the Meghalaya government to protest if the Union government fails to safeguard the interest of the people. He further said that in Meghalaya, BJP-NPP and UDP are hand-in-gloves in whatever they do.
Claiming that the Congress will fight for the interest of the Christians and tribals, he said that apart from the recent circular, there exist many other similar circulars issued by the intelligence and IB.
He took a potshot at the BJP for trying to threaten and scare the people of Meghalaya by saying that they will not get anything if they don’t vote for BJP.
The leader added that there are set rules and guidelines under which Meghalaya as a state has to be given its due share in terms of revenue which it deserves.
“It is not that West Bengal and Tamil Nadu are suffering because there are no BJP governments there,” he said.
The Congress leader also accused the BJP-led NDA Government at the Centre of not giving even a single financial package to Meghalaya even though it is in power for the last two terms.
