SHILLONG, Jan 12: At a time when Meghalaya Police is presenting itself as a people-friendly force, some police personnel are seen extorting money from truckers along the national highway in broad daylight.
On Thursday, a group of journalists travelling on the Shillong-Jowai highway witnessed a couple of police personnel collecting money from every trucker in full public view without any fear of being caught.
Two of them had positioned themselves near Ummulong village.
They were seen handing over the collected money to another person sitting in a private car.
Ahead of Ummulong, in Mookyndur village, another group of people in civil clothes was seen targeting the trucks.
Allegations of truckers being extorted at several ‘check gates’ along the highways in Meghalaya are not new.
