Tibetan community expresses solidarity with Dalai Lama
SHILLONG, April 20: The Tibetan community from Shillong on Thursday came together to express their solidarity with the spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, in the wake of the circulation of a contentious video doing rounds on social media. The Shillong Tibetan Buddhist Association is also holding a two-day prayer meeting at the Lumparing Buddhist Monastery in protest against the attempt to defame the Dalai Lama. Maintaining that this was a conspiracy to defame the Dalai Lama, the community present at the monastery also urged the spiritual leader to keep spreading the message of peace, love and harmony. Terming the video as doctored, the Tibetan community said that Chinese forces seem to be behind the plot.
Discussion on rejuvenation of Umshing-Umsohlang stream
SHILLONG, April 20: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Thursday met with members of Mawlai Town Dorbar and officials of PHE on the proposed rejuvenation of the Umshing-Umsohlang stream. Conrad said the meeting was to take the discussions ahead on the proposed rejuvenation and conservation of the Umshing-Umsohlang stream, which is the lifeline of the people of Mawlai. Recently, a meeting was organised by the government to discuss the rejuvenation and restoration of the major rivers of Shillong, including Wah Umkhrah, Wah Umshyrpi, and Wah Umkhen.
Officials conduct inspection
at Myntdu riverbank
JOWAI, April 20: The District Administration of West Jaintia Hills, along with the members of Khooid iaka Wah Myntdu, Synjuk Waheh Shnong Jowai, Synjuk Waheh Shnong Jaintia, Jaintia Fishing and Environment Protection Association (JFEPA), Jowai Municipal Board (JMB), officer from Urban Department, on Thursday morning inspected the bank of Myntdu river. The inspection, which was carried following the order of the NGT, was aimed at discouraging people from extracting sand and stone at the riverside and from the river as well and washing their clothes and vehicles. Meanwhile, authorities have also been asked to take strong action against the people who are involved in mining and digging sand and stone from the riverside.
Sawkmie flags concern over
water scarcity in Mawlai
SHILLONG, April 20: Former MLA PT Sawkmie has expressed concern over the difficulties faced by the people of Mawlai owing to water scarcity, which has forced the general public to come out to express their anger. In a statement here on Thursday, Sawkmie said he cannot turn a deaf ear to the difficulties faced by the residents of Mawlai, and urged the chief engineer of the PHE department to take steps and resolve the issue in the constituency. Sawkmie has also urged upon the PHE department to immediately implement the new water supply scheme of Mawiong Umjapung, which was sanctioned when he was an MLA.
